The Space Between - Capturing the True Magic of Haṭha Yoga.

The word Haṭha in Haṭha Yoga isn't simply the name of a style of yoga. It comes from two Sanskrit syllables: Ha, meaning sun, and Tha, meaning moon. Together they represent the union of two complementary energies that exist within all of us.

The sun is active, outward-moving, warming, and often associated with the masculine principle. The moon is cool, still, reflective, receptive, and nourishing. Neither is better than the other. Yoga teaches us that true wellbeing comes from cultivating both.

I think one of the greatest imbalances in our world is that we've become obsessed with the solar. We celebrate doing, achieving, producing, constantly pushing forward, and wearing busyness as a badge of honour. We've forgotten the wisdom of the moon.

This is also at the heart of how I teach and practise yoga.

While there is certainly a place for strong, dynamic movement, my own practice is less about striving and more about listening. I'm less interested in how powerful a sequence looks and more interested in the restful awareness it cultivates. For me, yoga isn't simply exercise. It's an opportunity to slow down, regulate the nervous system, and create enough space for the body's own wisdom to emerge.

My focus is on the pause between the movements, the softness within the breath, and the quiet that follows effort. Those are the moments where I believe the deepest transformation takes place. They remind us that we don't always need to do more. Sometimes we simply need to get out of the way and allow the body to do what it has always known how to do.

Yoga reminds us that life isn't found in one or the other. It's found in the relationship between them- in the spaces between action and rest, effort and surrender, movement and stillness, the inhale and the exhale.

When we allow ourselves to pause, we stop trying to control everything. We begin to trust the innate intelligence that already exists within us. Breath deepens. The nervous system settles. Balance returns. Health returns. We come back to homeostasis.

Perhaps this is what Haṭha Yoga has been teaching us all along. Not simply how to move the body, but how to live in balance—to honour both the sun and the moon, both action and rest.

The real magic isn't in doing more.

The real magic is found in the space between.
