What the Sea Taught Me About Emotions

Living beside the sea has become an unexpected teacher.

No two days are the same.

One morning the water is calm and reflective. The next it is grey, restless, and wild. The sea changes colour, mood, movement, and energy with the weather.

Watching it, I began to notice something.

Emotions behave much the same way.

Like waves, they rise.

They build.

They crest.

And eventually they fall.

Yet so often we treat emotions as permanent conditions rather than passing experiences.

We become identified with them.

"I am anxious."

"I am angry."

"I am sad."

The sea reminds me that emotions are not who we are. They are movements occurring within us.

Just as the ocean remains beneath the waves, there is something within us that remains beneath our changing emotional states.

Ayurveda teaches us to observe nature because nature reflects us back to ourselves.

The sea has become one of my favourite mirrors.

Every wave reminds me that nothing stays.

Every tide reminds me that life moves in cycles.

And every storm reminds me that even the roughest waters eventually return to calm.
